Saturday, May 20th, the San Diego-Edinburgh Sister City Society and the Gaslamp Quarter Association are hosting “Dog Day in May”. The event, an afternoon tea party and auction, is in honor of Bum and Bobby, two of the most wonderful dogs in the histories of San Diego and Edinburgh.
Bum made history over 100 years ago when he was adopted by our City as the official town dog. In 1989 Mayor Maureen O’Connor and Lord Provost Elenor McLaughlin of Edinburgh, Scotland designated Bum and Greyfriars Bobby as “Brother Dogs”.
This proclamation was the beginning of a dream to honor two historical dogs of the Sister Cities of San Diego and Edinburgh, which were twinned in 1977.
The hosts of the event plan to raise funds and awareness to place bronze statues of Bum and Bobby in San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter.
The bronze statue memorial will become a destination for walking and tour groups, a photo opportunity for residents and their dogs, and a part of the Downtown Walk of Fame.
Mark your calendars for Saturday, May 20th from 3:00 - 5:30 p.m. and stop by the lovely Casa del Viento, located at 540 Gage Lane in Point Loma, CA 92106 for food, live entertainment and dog friendly fun. For reservations call (619) 233-4692.
