August 2007: Loews 2nd Annual Surf Dog Small Wave Competition on August 18

IMPERIAL BEACH, Calif. – See Spot surf during the “Loews Coronado Bay Resort Surf Dog Competition” on August 18 in Imperial Beach – the nation’s only surfing competition for man’s best friend. There’s no dog paddling for these surf dogs… canine counterparts are invited to hang 10 (errr, 20) for a great cause.

Last year, hundreds of surf dogs, owners and spectators gathered in Imperial Beach near Carnation Avenue to watch the competition, and an even bigger crowd is expected at this year’s event. The “Loews Coronado Bay Resort Surf Dog Competition” schedule includes:

9 to 10:30 a.m. Optional surfing lessons for less experienced canines eager to catch their first wave.

11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Heat One: Surf Dogs. Each dog will have three waves and will be scored on confidence level, length of ride and overall ability to “grip it and rip it.”

12:30 to 2 p.m. Heat Two: Surf Dogs & Owners. Each team will have three waves and will be scored on confidence level, length of ride and overall ability to surf as a team.

2 to 2:30 p.m. Furry fashion show with doggie couture. Visitors can update their pooches’ summer look with fashions donated by Lucky Dog Boutique.

2:45 to 3 p.m. Awards ceremony. In the end, only the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners of each heat will score a ton of cool prizes and the bragging rights that come with owning the waves of San Diego County.

The “Loews Coronado Bay Resort Surf Dog Competition” stems from an overwhelming response to the Resort’s Su’ruff Camp package, which was named “an amazing thing to do with your dog” by Life magazine and Modern Dog magazine. Since Su’ruff Camp debuted in January 2006, more than 40 packages have been sold.

The cost to enter the competition is $40 for Surf Dogs in Heat One and $50 for Teams in Heat Two if registered by August 13. Registration after August 13 is $50 for Surf Dogs and $60 for Teams. There is no cost to attend and watch. Snacks and beverages will be available for purchase at the event. All proceeds will benefit the Resort’s Good Neighbor Council, a group of employees who volunteer their time to help raise money for various non-profit organizations, including Modest Needs and PAWS of Coronado. To register or for more information, please call 619-424-4000 ext. 6696.
