The Del Mar Fairgrounds hosted the 15th Annual Pug Party last Saturday, May 6th. The event, put on by the Pug Rescue of San Diego, celebrates all things Pug and attracts nearly 600 Pugs each year. The Pug Party is traditionally held on the first Saturday in May, rain or shine.
At the event, Pugs got to mingle with others of their kind. Owners swapped stories and basked in mutual affection for their flat-faced friends. Vendors and volunteers offered everything from pug manicures to pug-themed accessories, including ties, pillows and tote bags.
Owners brought their pets in a variety of dog attire; this year’s clothing theme was “Military Pugs”. Several games, contests and raffles were held at the event with a variety of prizes and trophies for the winners.
Sammy’s good friend, Homer, won “Most Distinguished Senior Pug” at the Pug Party this year, while Lucky Dog customer Spartacus won “Best Male Pug Costume”.
The Pug Rescue of San Diego is a nonprofit group that finds homes for pugs that animal shelters have labeled as not adoptable because they are too old or have medical problems.
The Pug Party started out in a backyard and has grown over the years into a major annual fundraising event. Last year's Pug Party raised more than $17,000. All proceeds from the event will benefit the Pug Rescue of San Diego.
